Crossing Currents: Confluences, Conflicts, and Connections
The 2027 ASIANetwork conference theme evokes transpacific oceanic flows and environmental currents as both metaphors and material forces. It recognizes the challenges and opportunities in education about Asia, Asian diasporas, and Asian American / AAPI studies created by the shifting landscapes of geopolitics and our societies. Threats to academic freedom, rapid technological transformation, and ongoing debates about the value and purpose of liberal arts education have placed new pressures–and added significance–on interdisciplinary inquiry and global engagement. This theme invites us to explore how movements of people, ideas, technologies, and ecologies intersect, collide, and resonate across Asia and the Pacific, and it encourages us to renew or forge new collaborative pathways.
We welcome papers from all disciplines, especially on the following topics:
- Border regimes, exclusion, and human rights frameworks
- Business, trade, and economics
- Colonial legacies, nationalisms, and resistance movements
- Digital networks, data flows, social media, and AI
- Environmental issues, health, and sustainability amid climate change
- Experiential learning, study-in-Asia, and community-engaged pedagogy
- Hybridity in art, religion, philosophy, languages, literature, and performance
- Indigenous and local knowledge, languages, and cultural practices
- Migration and diasporic movements across and within Asia, the Pacific, and globally
- New and innovative approaches to Asian language study
- Pedagogical practices connecting Asian and global perspectives
