Vietnam: The River’s Edge

Call for Participants

The River’s Edge: Ecology, Culture, and Commerce in the Mekong

ASIANetwork invites faculty from across all disciplines to apply for “The River’s Edge: Ecology, Culture, and Commerce in the Mekong,” an immersive development tour of Vietnam exploring the intersections of life along a vital and contested waterway. This three-week program welcomes individual faculty applicants as well as two-person faculty teams from a single institution.

This transdisciplinary program aims to further faculty expertise, cultivate interdisciplinary partnerships, and support pedagogical innovations across academic departments. Participants will engage with a broad historical and social spectrum, including precolonial history, the legacies of Chinese and French colonialism, post-conflict recovery, and the unification of distinct regions. By bridging perspectives from history, art, economics, sociology, agriculture, religious studies, and environmental science, the tour approaches modern Vietnam and the Mekong Delta as both a cradle of ancient civilizations and a contemporary frontline for global developmental and ecological challenges.

Through the generous support of the Luce Foundation, ASIANetwork is able to provide international and domestic airfare, accommodations and meals.

Through this Institute, you will:

  • advance your expertise in contemporary Vietnamese society, environmental issues, and business, in the greater Asian geopolitical context, and, as applicable,
  • create new course material for a range of departmental courses
  • develop classroom and career-relevant teaching modules
  • identify opportunities for student internships and project-based learning
pursue possibilities for Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL), and
  • prepare to lead new short-term study abroad programs.

Participants will create new educational resources to be shared with the ASIANetwork community.

The tentative dates of the program are June 21 – July 12, 2027. Participants are expected to attend the ASIANetwork Conference in Seattle (April 16-18, 2027) for orientation and planning (ASIANetwork encourages the use of institutional faculty development funds) and the 2028 ASIANetwork Conference (date and location TBD) for final presentation of outcomes. The 2028 conference attendance is covered as part of the program.

Application deadline: September 15, 2026
